Statistical Study on Apgar Score of Newborn Infants Delivered in a Hospital

Abstract
This statistical study was made on 1,114 newborn infants delivered at the Seoul National University Hospital from Jan. 1 to Dec. 31, 1971 to figure out any relations between Apgar scores and obstetric problems such as the general characteristics of mothers and newborn infants, induction of the labor, mothers and newborn of the labr, mode of delivery, antenatal cares and obstetric complications.
The results were summarized as followings:
1. The percentage distribution of Apgar score for 1,114 newborn infants was 85.3%(950) for score 7-10, 14.7%(164) for 0-6.
2. The birth weight of newborn infants had statistical significances in the general characteristics of mothers and newborn infants. The premature lower than 2,500gm was shown a reasonable neonatal depression.
3. The neonatal depression in the induction group was shown 6% lower than distribution is the spontaneous delivery group, and it was proven to have good results when the induction is used in the proper period.
4. There was no significant results between sedation group and non-sedation group in the neonatal depression.
5. The percentage distribution between duration of labor and Apgar score was disclosed 66% neonatal depression in the group taken more than 2 hours of the second stage of labor.
6. The percentage distribution of the group taken more 24 hours after membrane rupture was shown severe neonatal depression as 29.0% compared with the other groups.
7. Apgar score was greatly influenced by the modes of the deliveries, and compared with the spontaneous vertex delivery and the whole abnormal delivery, the percentage distribution was similar in neonatal depression. But the order of the bad condition in the abnormal delivery were hysterotomy, breech, C-section, vaccum and forceps.
8. There was a great neonatal depression in the non-antenatal care group than in the antenatal one. The group(274:24.6%) having obstertrical complications during pregnancy was disclosed 3 times neonatal depression than in the group not having it.
